Last December, Access Plus launched the Ducati Hyperstrada. The marriage between the Adventure Bike Multistrada and Street Hooligan Hypermotard was touted as the one bike that could do it all. Fast forward several months later and Access Plus, through their energetic General Manager, Marc De Joya contacts me about reviewing several of their motorcycles and gives me a list of which bike to begin with. I immediately chose the Hyperstrada.
The Ride
After waiting several days for the weather to clear up. I was pleasantly surprised to wake up one morning with sun gloriously out. I took it as my cue to get the Hyperstrada on the road before the weather changed its mind. Since I was pressed for time, I decided to ride to Nasugbu via the scenic Ternate Coastal Road. So after several pleas and offers of free lunches to a couple of ride buddies, we were off.

At home in the city as well as on the open road.
Legal highway speed running on the Hyperstrada was uneventful. The 820cc Testatretta engine purring along, seemingly bored at the posted speed limit. It was a good time to get myself acquainted with the rest of the bike. Wind protection from the included touring screen is adequate but it could use a higher screen for higher speeds and longer travel. The handguards work as advertised, my hands were protected from the elements, which would prove very important at the end of the trip. Seating position is comfortable. I have to say though, I was waiting for lower back pain I thought would come from riding in a more forward/upright stance, but it never did.
Once we were on the wide-open back roads approaching the mountains of Ternate, I decided to open up the throttle a bit. I had set the riding mode to Touring before I left so that gave me a whole lot of power with the perfect amount of safety, thanks to the traction control and abs which comes standard with the Hyperstrada. Power is delivered instantaneously via the Ride by Wire system. Smooth and sure is how I would describe it. Rip it for power or feather it for fine adjustments during turning, it never misses a beat.

The Hyperstrada’s ride is a bit of a mixed bag. More Hypermotard than Multistrada, the Hyperstrada excels in the tarmac really, really well. Soaking up the small bumps and handling the occasional road cut well. But an off-road machine this is not. It can handle the odd dirt road but that’s as far as I would take it. Bigger obstacles on the road will have to be handled by another machine. But take it on the road and this is where it truly shines. The 5.9 in. travel in both the front and rear suspension provides just the right support for the uneven roads we, unfortunately, pass through.
Turning is where the Hyperstrada truly feels in its element. I am not an expert rider by any stretch of the imagination, but the feeling of confidence the Hyperstrada gives, while in the twisties, is something to experience. I found myself slowly going deeper and faster into turns I would have usually just given up and put-putted aroud. The engine’s excellent torque means you have the ability to stay in a gear longer and power out of turns without having to shift. Couple the excellent power delivery with the Hyperstrada’s slipper clutch and you’ll find yourself grinning as you approach a new set of twisties.

As standard the Hyperstrada is equipped with the Ducati Safety Pack with a 2-level ABS and 8-level DTC. Also available, as previously mentioned is the different Riding Modes (Sport, Touring and Urban). Each mode has preset parameters which, if you would want to, can be tweaked to your own preference. The modes can easily be controlled via a button on the left handlebar with the display showing in the Hyperstrada’s ample LCD screen. I was able to try the Hyperstrada’s Urban mode at the end of our ride. Traffic was at a standstill and the rain was pouring quite hard. It felt like I was riding a bike of a lot lower displacement. The power I had been used to the whole day, wasn’t’ there anymore, and in those conditions, it was a good thing. You could confidently ride in rain or in traffic without worrying. Great stuff.
Conclusion:
Originally a mashup of two Ducati models, the Hyperstrada can safely claim its own niche in the growing Sport-Touring category of riding. A strong engine, comfortable riding position, wind protection and the included panniers make the Hyperstrada a capable Tourer that can rip up the roads as well as the tracks when called upon.

A joy to look at from the front…….

..as well as the rear.
