Another Part of the program was the launch of the “Supremo Hero” to the public. Honda “ Supremo Hero “search was open to all TODA ( Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association ) for nomination that started last July and ended in September . After rigid months of search finally Honda Philippines Inc. had found its Honda Supremo Hero, a 55-year-old Rogelio Parungao, a tricycle driver from Marikina City.
Rogelio copped the Honda ‘Supremo Hero’ Award because he was nominated by his TODA for meeting the criteria set by the nationwide search and recognition program.
Marikina City is one of the flood-prone areas in Metro Manila especially during typhoons and some weather disturbances and Rogelio is one to rush to people in need of assistance whenever the need arises, especially those trapped by rampaging floods, taking them to safety and the appropriate evacuation center.
But what takes the cake for Rogelio to win the ‘Supremo Hero’ Award is when he acted as a real-life hero in a recent crime incident. One morning, two suspicious men boarded his tricycle, and asked him to take them to the hospital because one was suffering from a wound in the head.
Rogelio abided by the orders of his passengers to drive but he took them instead to the town’s barangay hall because he had a sickening feeling that the two were criminal elements. It turns out that he was right because the two passengers were indeed robbers, who stole several gadgets from a boarding house a few hours earlier.
Before even reaching the barangay hall, one of the suspects attempted to escape while the other tried to harm him. But he managed to overwhelm them both with his arnis skills he learned from his father and his aikido prowess which he picked up from Iglesia ni Cristo, which also teaches their members self-defense.
The lawless elements were eventually brought to justice and are now serving time in prison for their crimes. The barangay awarded Rogelio a certificate of recognition for his exemplary bravery and it is also one of the reasons why Honda Philippines has chosen him to become its first ever ‘Supremo Hero’ awardee, befitting the mark of a true hero he has showcased.
