To separate them from criminals on motorcycles, bikers in Quezon City will be given vests, which show their vehicles’ plate numbers, by the local police starting tomorrow, an official said yesterday.

Crimes perpetrated by suspects on motorcycles have given innocent motorcycle riders a bad reputation – just riding a motorcycle could make a person subject to suspicion, according to Quezon City Police District (QCPD) director Senior Superintendent Richard Albano.

This is about as idiotic as it gets.  Again an ordinance that has not been thought over and consultations which were held were most probably ignored.  Stop criminality by going after the criminals, not after the legitimate riders.  Having riders, in any city, have to wear the vest, is the Scarlet Letter of our time.

This will open up riders to the dangers of bad elements stealing their vests and using those in criminal exploits.  It does not solve anything.

Shell Advance and STAR Sports to air new travel series, ‘Freedom Riders Asia’

In the Philippines our beaches and mountain ranges are must-see sites for tourists and adventure seekers alike. Add biodiversity and natural resources to that, and it is no wonder why one of our more famous provinces, Palawan, was chosen to be featured in the new turbo-injected series “Freedom Riders Asia.”

World-renowned biker Charley Boorman rode the streets of Puerto Princesa as one of his pit stops in Freedom Riders Asia; a six- part travel series he hosts airing on STAR Sports which features man and motorcycle on the move for fun, freedom, and performance.

Sponsored by Shell Advance, the world’s leading brand for lubricants, the series had Boorman venture the roads of six countries including Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Vietnam, Thailand, and The Philippines, where he was immersed in their respective motorcycle cultures.

A local graffiti artist shows Charley Boorman how to customize design for a motorcycle while filming “Freedom Riders Asia”- one of the many ways to bond with your bike in the Philippines.

We believe that Boorman and the show embody what we offer to all of our customers — the enjoyment of every ride and allowing them to experience freedom through effortless and hassle-free mobility on the road.”

In the Philippine leg of Freedom Riders Asia, Boorman and his accompaniment of top Filipino riders journeyed in the capital of the unspoiled, nature-friendly Palawan with one tank of petrol on his Honda XR200. He also used three other bikes during his trip – a motorcross bike, an underbone bike and a trike or the “Best of Burden.”

“Bikes have always been my passion and I’ve always been interested with Asia’s diversity. What’s great in doing the show is that it gave me the opportunity to mix my passion for biking and to experience the warmth and beauty of Asia and its people,” said Boorman as he recalled the hospitality of the locals and eating delicious, exquisite Palaweño delicacies.

Boorman spent his first day in Puerto Princesa searching for his road buddy in a local garage. There he was introduced by the owner to an underbone bike. He took some twists and turns with it, and off he went.

“I met great local biker groups in the Philippines. They taught me things I need to learn while riding in their part of the world. Being from the UK, I definitely enjoyed the sun on my face and the freedom my bike gave me while traveling in Palawan,” added Boorman.

To cap off Boorman’s stay in Puerto Princesa, he watched and mingled with the participants of the 450cc Veterans Race category of FIM Asia Motocross/Supercross Challenge – considered as one of the most anticipated motocross challenges in Asia. He also tried his hand out in this class.

FOX International Channel’s (FIC) Asia, the operating organization of STAR Sports channel in Asia, celebrated this partnership with Shell and said, “Freedom Riders Asia was developed specifically for the Asian audience as Asia has a growing population of adventure and travel enthusiasts. We were confident that audience would appreciate and enjoy the places and activities that Boorman visited and experienced, especially due to the local colors and flavors showcased.”

Furthermore, FOX was delighted that Shell Advance has collaborated “to produce this program with an innovative show concept aimed at further engaging with the audiences on a deeper level.”

Meanwhile, on May 15- a week before its Philippine airing- Freedom Riders Asia will have its exclusive premier in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Members of the media and biker clubs will get to meet Boorman, in person, as well as the privilege of watching the pilot episode of his new adventure series.  Freedom Riders Asia will also be shown on FOX, National Geographic and FX.

Often times people with authority grand stand even if their plan is half cooked, just for the sake, they did something about it and if it does not work, they simply point the finger to the fall guy. How could the authorities come up with these bright ideas and the people who advise the authorities, who say they care about the safety of riders. If safety is the priority then they should think way hard for the safety of motorists from 2-4-6 wheels and the more with 18-wheelers before they even start suggesting their, so-called bright ideas.

BMW took over the production of helios motorcycles, producing their first bike in 1923 under the BMW name. the company’s first model was the BMW R 32, a motorcycle that was distinctly different to the helios and victoria bikes with respect to the crankshaft; the engine was not mounted in a transverse direction but longitudinally, in line with the direction of travel. the R 32 was presented at the berlin motor show in september 1923.

Don’t be a squid, be AZTIG!

The unrelenting rain the previous night made many an MRO volunteer nervous about how the weather will turn out the next day.  One look at the MRO Facebook page and you can see growing apprehension among the mostly excited participants.  As the evening drew to a close and a light shower covering the city, I was pretty sure the following day would greet us with sunshine.

As the day dawned on the 12th, all signs that a clear day was ahead of us were apparent.  The sun was out, clouds were present but few and far between, the roads were dry.  Time to do this.

Arriving a bit late for the opening ceremonies, I made my way up and down the long lines of parked motorcycles, big and small, that lined almost the entire stretch of White Plains Ave.  A big throng of bikes blocked the approach to the people power monument itself so I decided to just anonymously park my bike at the rear of the line, a good 10 minute walk from the podium.

It was good to see familiar faces and better to see new faces.  The renewed unity that MRO was bringing back to the community has sparked a guarded optimism in me.  As I said during my brief speech on the podium, I have been around for a while and have seen the community unite and divide so many times it was getting rather hard to believe that full unity was even possible.  But seeing the participants that morning gave me hope.  Here we were, bikers.  No classifications, no displacements, no socio-economic gobbledygook separating one from the other.  Just kindred spirits and brothers on the road fighting for what all of us believe in.

As the speeches ended and the motorcade began, I felt pride in seeing the community united once again.  It’s been a long time since I’ve seen that and I hope it stays that way a long, long time.
