The One Bike: Ducati Hyperstrada Review

$

coverLast December, Access Plus launched the Ducati Hyperstrada. The marriage between the Adventure Bike Multistrada and Street Hooligan Hypermotard was touted as the one bike that could do it all. Fast forward several months later and Access Plus, through their energetic General Manager, Marc De Joya contacts me about reviewing several of their motorcycles and gives me a list of which bike to begin with. I immediately chose the Hyperstrada.

The Ride
After waiting several days for the weather to clear up. I was pleasantly surprised to wake up one morning with sun gloriously out. I took it as my cue to get the Hyperstrada on the road before the weather changed its mind. Since I was pressed for time, I decided to ride to Nasugbu via the scenic Ternate Coastal Road. So after several pleas and offers of free lunches to a couple of ride buddies, we were off.

At home in the city as well as on the open road.

At home in the city as well as on the open road.

Legal highway speed running on the Hyperstrada was uneventful. The 820cc Testatretta engine purring along, seemingly bored at the posted speed limit. It was a good time to get myself acquainted with the rest of the bike. Wind protection from the included touring screen is adequate but it could use a higher screen for higher speeds and longer travel. The handguards work as advertised, my hands were protected from the elements, which would prove very important at the end of the trip. Seating position is comfortable. I have to say though, I was waiting for lower back pain I thought would come from riding in a more forward/upright stance, but it never did.

Once we were on the wide-open back roads approaching the mountains of Ternate, I decided to open up the throttle a bit. I had set the riding mode to Touring before I left so that gave me a whole lot of power with the perfect amount of safety, thanks to the traction control and abs which comes standard with the Hyperstrada. Power is delivered instantaneously via the Ride by Wire system. Smooth and sure is how I would describe it. Rip it for power or feather it for fine adjustments during turning, it never misses a beat.

Brembo powered breaks with Ducati ABS.

Brembo powered breaks with Ducati ABS.

The Hyperstrada’s ride is a bit of a mixed bag. More Hypermotard than Multistrada, the Hyperstrada excels in the tarmac really, really well. Soaking up the small bumps and handling the occasional road cut well. But an off-road machine this is not. It can handle the odd dirt road but that’s as far as I would take it. Bigger obstacles on the road will have to be handled by another machine. But take it on the road and this is where it truly shines. The 5.9 in. travel in both the front and rear suspension provides just the right support for the uneven roads we, unfortunately, pass through.

Turning is where the Hyperstrada truly feels in its element. I am not an expert rider by any stretch of the imagination, but the feeling of confidence the Hyperstrada gives, while in the twisties, is something to experience. I found myself slowly going deeper and faster into turns I would have usually just given up and put-putted aroud. The engine’s excellent torque means you have the ability to stay in a gear longer and power out of turns without having to shift. Couple the excellent power delivery with the Hyperstrada’s slipper clutch and you’ll find yourself grinning as you approach a new set of twisties.

Rear suspension with remote adjustable pre-load and rebound damping.

Rear suspension with remote adjustable pre-load and rebound damping.

As standard the Hyperstrada is equipped with the Ducati Safety Pack with a 2-level ABS and 8-level DTC. Also available, as previously mentioned is the different Riding Modes (Sport, Touring and Urban). Each mode has preset parameters which, if you would want to, can be tweaked to your own preference. The modes can easily be controlled via a button on the left handlebar with the display showing in the Hyperstrada’s ample LCD screen. I was able to try the Hyperstrada’s Urban mode at the end of our ride. Traffic was at a standstill and the rain was pouring quite hard. It felt like I was riding a bike of a lot lower displacement. The power I had been used to the whole day, wasn’t’ there anymore, and in those conditions, it was a good thing. You could confidently ride in rain or in traffic without worrying. Great stuff.

Conclusion:

hyper-turn

Originally a mashup of two Ducati models, the Hyperstrada can safely claim its own niche in the growing Sport-Touring category of riding. A strong engine, comfortable riding position, wind protection and the included panniers make the Hyperstrada a capable Tourer that can rip up the roads as well as the tracks when called upon.

A joy to look at from the front.......

September 20, instead of embarking on the Trail Ride going to General Nakar, Honda has opted to responded instantaneously to the needs of our brothers and sisters who has suffered from the wrath of Typhoon Mario.

honda-mario1

Leaving Marikina and other parts of the country with floods and destructions, a group of Honda Barkada extended a helping hand to those who were affected. Serving as the headquarters for this mission is the 20 Studio Residences which has been the center for the preparation of goods prior to distribution. The XRM Bikers Club, Club CB110, Club Scoopy of the Philippines have visited an evacuation center at Nangka Elementary School of Marikina, right after the onslaught of Typhoon Mario to provide the evacuaees with ample food to fill their empty stomach. At an about 150 families, this noble act has been very satisfying to those who were fed, thus giving them the right energy to face the next and succeeding days ahead. Basket of groceries and rice were also given to one hundred families to content their very basic needs.

With these simple acts, Honda will aid in building and rebuilding a community where everyone can again pursue and continue their dreams.

Sissies need not apply.

The toughest motorcycle challenge ever in the Philippines, the 2015 Spyder-Motorally, powered by Petron is not for the faint of heart. Covering a distance of 1000 miles (1609 kilometers), seasoned riders are expected to travel through the potholes and smog of the Metro, the endless stretches of the provincial highways of Maharlika and National Road, the treacherous tracks of mountains passes of Aritao and Naguilian. Through the light of day and the dark of night, weathering the scorching sun and the cold of rain, they would have to do it within the confines of a 24 hour period.

The 2015 Spyder-Motorally is now headed up by Spyder, one of the leading brands of eyewear and helmets. With the institutionalization of the event in the previous years, the riders are rest-assured this 2015 of a more fun and more fulfilling experience.

The Spyder-Motorally participants are set to blaze the roads on February 21 to 22, 2015. Starting at the rider-favorite Sierra Madre Resort along Marcos Highway in Tanay, the send-off for the sub400cc riders are set to start at 12:00mn (first second of Feb 21), a 6 hour head start from the above 400cc displacement bikes who will start at 6am of the same day. The start time difference between the two displacement categories will be equalized by the above 400cc bikes’ ability to utilize the expressways SCTEX, NLEX and SLEX where in the end, the finish time of both is set at 6am of Feb 22. 150 slots are allotted for each category.

The briefing will be on February 8, while the awarding ceremonies for finishers will be held on March 8, both on Sunday morning to be held also at the Sierra Madre Resort. To join, participants need only register on or before January 31, 2015 with a P2,500 fee and the accompanying required forms. Finishers will be given fuel and other awards for completing the challenge but more than anything, their reward will be a personal bragging right of being able to complete the toughest endurance challenge of the country to date.

Powering the event by providing nothing less than the best fuel for the finishers is Petron. As Petron has hundreds of gas stations located nationwide, they will serve not only as refilling stations, but also as strategically placed checkpoints as well throughout the event route, providing a comfortable abode for the checkpoint marshals and the participants.

The Spyder-Motorally is not a race so safety will be paramount and no incentives will be given to participants arriving first. All participants are required to obey all traffic rules and regulations and to observe proper road courtesy at all times.

For application and further details, please visit the Spyder website at www.teamspyder.com and the event Facebook page at www.facebook.com/Motorally2015.

Spyder recently launched the newest series of graphics for the Grid helmet, the Classic style. While the graphics design obviously targets the scooteristas, especially with classic-looking scooters like Vespas and Stellas, hence the 2211 as a launchpad, the grid’s quarter-shell design actually fits any motorbike, with casual-demeanor riders in mind. The ABS composite shell provides the rider the safety he/she needs while still looking gorgeous with the lid. The scratch-resistant no-warp lens ensures optimum visibility against glares while its quick release system allows the rider a quick lens change to match the ambience; chrome or tinted for the day touring, clear for night riding. Other models of the Grid further the convenience by having dual-lens, a clear outer lens, and a retractable dark lens that hides or pops with a flick of a switch. Strategically-placed aero-vents cool the rider’s head especially during a scorching day ride. The new Grid Classic’s graphics is a collage of the different aspect of the classic scooter lifestyle artfully integrated to the shell of the helmet. The Grid now comes in three color variations: black & white, sepia and full graphics.

Potato corner gave our cholesterols some boost with their presence.

The Manila-Matnog-Manila Run year 7

With 270 participants who set ablaze the roads from Manila to Matnog, overwhelming success is even an understatement.  The one-track-minded riders, who got nothing else in focus but to reach the endpoint of Luzon and back, have waited too long preparing their machines and themselves for an endurance event they will never forget.  For most, the Manila-Matnog-Manila is the adventure of a lifetime.

November 22, the riders started trickling in at 2pm, and poured in at twilight.  Though their mindset is the 600-kilometer first half of the ride, the riders found themselves socializing with fellow adventurers and wellwishers alike, hours before the flag-off.

The Suzuki arc has been the favorite photo backdrop of the rider, which served as the takeoff pointer as well as the beacon calling the riders home.  Also, kind-hearted Suzuki dedicated one vehicle to help pick up downed riders, brand irregardless.

Yamaha made it all worthwhile for the participants and guests by showing off their touring bikes, the SZ-16 and the FZ-16, as well as the race-ready Sniper 135, and by gifting the riders items that they will be needing in their long journey such as a shirt, a water bottle, water-proof cellphone holder, and some even get to take home a Yamaha legbag.   Beam catering provided the riders, marshals and organizers the grub such us rice meals, pizza rolls, hotdog sandwich and of course some powerful potions such as sodas and coffees.  Ahavia Spa and Lounge gave away shirts and mugs and of course a good massage by certified therapists.  JM Mirasol Advertising provided the motorcycle and helmet stickers, which doesn’t easily disintegrate when peeled, but can even be restickered to another surface.  The night was also braced by the presence of YKL Fujifilm, who will give away cameras in the awarding ceremony.

Overdose Motoproducts were to provide riders with motorcycle bags such as tankbags, leg bags and slingbags.  Cycleseal Tire Sealant, which must be must for all long-distance rider, were given away to some lucky participants.
The event venue is wonderfully located near C5 where the riders would take on as he/she exits.  Starmall Prima Taguig’s huge parking lot and RDU served as the launch pad of all 267 riders.  It is also here where riders, 24 hours about, will be embraced by loved ones and given high fives by friends and clubmates.
JAC Motors , 14-footer dropside truck was the official backup truck of the event, and with the adrenalized throttle hands of the riders, many found their machines can handle only so much, with some having a burst tire, some getting a lowside and even some just plain quitting, the JAC truck soon found itself full to the brim of motorcycles needing a little repair.  MTRT, creator of performance parts for motorcycles, not only helped riders do some roadside repairs, but also picked up riders and machines who couldn’t continue on.

Although the Manila-Matnog-Manila Challenge has been in existence for 7 years now, it was the first time that Spyder partnered up with the organizers and co-organized the event.  And with this partnership, the outcome was M3’s most successful yet.  In the motorcycling community, in physical and in the social media, the buzzword until now is the Manila-Matnog-Manila.  Everybody is talking about it, how they enjoyed every minute and every kilometers of roads traveled, or how those who missed the opportunity expressed regret.  Of how those who didn’t finish because of whatever reasons expressed exacting vengeance and reckoning on next year’s 8th M3 in 2015.

The 7th Manila-Matnog-Manila was an epic story of adventure which the participants will be telling friends and loved ones for a long time.
