When the race tracks are cold and empty, bench racing will have to do. A good place to start: Who will win the MotoGP title in 2017?

We can all speculate, but a good place to look for expert opinions are the U.K. betting houses. Walk into a Las Vegas casino and say you want to place a wager on Maverick Viñales, and I’ll give you good odds on getting a blank stare. On the other side of the Atlantic, however, there are more than a dozen large betting firms where you can try to pick the 2017 MotoGP champion and win some pocket change.

She’s ridden everywhere from the wild roads of the mountains of Kalinga in the Philippines to the teeming city streets of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, and she’s done it on everything from a Harley-Davidson Sportster to a Ural to a Ducati Hyperstrada.

She got tattooed by a 96-year-old woman at the top of a mountain, hung out with the Independent MC of Brunei and swam with whale sharks. She might just have the wildest side hustle any motorcyclist could dream of.

Driven to distraction: California texters and other drivers out to kill you

Among other laws that took effect at the stroke of midnight the other night, California changed a state distracted-driving law.

Technically, Assembly Bill 1785 fixes a quirk in Section 23123.5 of the California Vehicle Code. The old Section 231235 made it illegal to text while driving, unless your phone was equipped with a “hands-free” texting feature — i.e., you could legally dictate your texts. The change clarifies that you can’t actually be holding the phone while driving.

2017 BOSS Ironman Motorcycle Challenge Press Conference

$

The BMW Owners Society of Saferiders (BOSS) held the final press conference before takeoff of the 12th BOSS Ironman Motorcycle Challenge this Friday evening at the Hotel Stotsenberg in Clark, Pampanga.

BOSS officers lead by 2017 Ironman Chairman Jojo Bautista, BOSS President, Tey Usis; and committee members Teng Soreta, Rey Clavecillas, Raymond Guevarra and Enzo Bautista as well as last year’s Ironman Chairman and this year’s media coordinator Raymon Gabriel hosted members of media as they gave their final pointers regarding the 12th Ironman Challenge.

Below are several of the important points which were discussed.

Registration will be closed soon so those who are still thinking about joining will have to do it soon.  You may register online here.

Take off has been moved to 10:00 PM to allow for extra time for the participants to reach the Echague checkpoint before 3pm.  Participants who arrive at the Echague checkpoint at 3pm or later will not be allowed to pass through the Cordon-Diffun-Maddela-Aurora Road (river crossing).  You will be asked to pass through the normal route via Santiago towards Dalton Pass and San Jose towards the next checkpoint in Talavera.  All participants who pass through this route past 3pm will still be considered finishers.

Take off sequence is as follows:

  • Cars
  • Groups of 10
  • Individual Riders

All participants are requested to follow the marshals at the venue to avoid confusion and confrontations.  Your ride/drive will be timed so it doesn’t matter when you start.

All participants are advised to follow the recommended route set by the Ironman committee.  Deviation from the official route will mean absence of support from the Ironman organizers.  Support personnel/vehicles are stationed along the official route ONLY.

A Garmin file of the official route will be released by the organizing committee.  Check the official Ironman Facebook page for updates regarding this.

The Petron checkpoint in Tuguegarao does not appear in Google Maps so make sure you check the given coordinates in the official route map.  A bit of trivia from the route coordinator BOSS Teng Soreta, the Petron checkpoint in Echague is named Petron Ironman Echague so you really can’t miss it.

Always remember that this is not a race no special awards are given to those who will finish first.  Ride at your own pace and enjoy the view.

There may be other announcements by BOSS which are not included here so please make sure to check the official Ironman Facebook page regularly.

The BOSS have really gone out of their way to make this years Ironman both a challenge and an adventure and it seems that the Ironman will soon have satellite activities all over the archipelago.  Congratulations BOSS and good luck to all the participants of the Ironman Challenge.

Triumph unveiled its long-awaited remake of its most popular model line, the Street Triple, with a new 765 cc engine in three different models.Still retaining the Street Triple name, the bike will come in S, R and RS trim. In the United States, pricing starts at $9,900 for the S model, so basically we’re getting a replacement for a popular model that is more powerful, adds more features and, according to Triumph, actually weighs a few pounds less, without taking a huge jump in price.

Dirty Business – Trail Ride to Laiban, Tanay, Rizal|Turban Rider

It was the classiest trail ride ever, safe to say! Mighty fine looking gentlemen (and ladies) all dressed up for the Dirty Business – Business Class Trail Ride to Baranggay Laiban in Tanay, Rizal.

So what’s with the suit, a lot of people asks. I always say “it’s so fun and easy, that we do it even in our suit!”. The idea came when someone (well you know me, I forgot who) asked me if trail riding is hard. I said, it depends. There are three types of riders. First is the roadies, who loves speed, or protracted riding. Or blingin their bikes. Second is those who want it hard, like literally punishing yourself with steep mountain climbs, slippery mud slides, and with them come hard crashes. Then thirdly there is us, dual-sports guys. We both love on and offroads. And to prove a point, I decided to to a trail ride donning a coat and a tie. Along the way, I asked my fellow crazy friends, team WEBE, if they’re ok with the idea. As I said, crazy, so yeah, they’re ok with it.

WTATWTA: Engine timing – RevZilla

In this edition of Why things are the way they are, a man who can’t figure out comedic timing explains engine timing. Both kinds.

It sounds good, doesn’t it? When someone mentions that an engine’s out of time, you can’t help but think he knows a lot about what’s happening inside a motor. But what is timing? It’s funny how often I ask this and receive an answer that’s just way off base. For our purposes here, let’s assume we’re working with a fairly basic and stock engine — nothing exotic — and explain exactly what timing actually is.

2017 Triumph Street Cup first ride review – RevZilla

Nearly a year after I set out across the American South on a Triumph Street Twin, I found myself riding a Triumph Street Cup across the south of Spain. Maybe it was the jet lag or the nearly 24 hours of taxis, flights, layovers and customs checks, but I kept finding unexpected similarities.

Inside the city limits, Seville was similar to what I experienced in New Orleans. Life comes at a slower pace and people actually talk to one another at the cafés in town while avoiding their phones. Exiting the city, t

“Does anyone want to add some dirt roads into today’s route?”

This question was posed to a group of motorcyclists well versed in dirt and ADV riding. Having just traveled halfway around the globe for a chance to ride Triumph’s updated Street Scrambler, one might as well have asked a group of high school kids if they’d like an extra week of summer vacation. The answer is always yes.

In the Presence of Greatness: Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi and Maverick Viñales Rev in Manila

Manila, January 28, 2017 — what a way to start the year by Yamaha Motor Philippines; the arrival of “The Doctor” Valentino Rossi and “Top Gun” Maverick Vinales was an event that went above and beyond anyone’s expectations. The two icons for Yamaha Racing were introduced for the first time as new teammates before they embark on their maiden MotoGP season together.

Just before dawn on a Saturday Morning the two riders landed in Manila from Indonesia and even after a tiring trip they were all smiles for the cameras as they exited the airport. It was a short rest for them as they headed to Robinsons Novaliches Trade Hall for their press conference. The jam packed venue was mixed with supporters of both riders who waved red and yellow flags respectively. As Maverick and Valentino came on stage they were greeted by a thunderous roar.

For the young Maverick, this was his first time in the country and could not believe the overwhelming support of the Filipinos for him before he formally starts his career with Yamaha. It was a display that he appreciated immensely and hoped he could properly reciprocate with his performance in the MotoGP.

He shared to those who aspired to reach the level he was on that they do not need the best facilities or the best circumstances to achieve greatness; all it takes is passion and determination to succeed, that the desire to win can take you and your motorcycle anywhere. He also stated that the opportunity to race alongside Valentino will make him an even better rider and their good relationship will be the key in winning together. His opinion on why he moved to Yamaha was how much better he could become with the a racing team filled with championship experience guiding him, the class of machinery he will be using to reach his maximum potential, and revving alongside one of the best to ever ride in the MotoGP.

The returning Valentino seemingly doesn’t get used to the outpouring support he gets in the Philippines. After competing for more than 15 years he is still grateful and overjoyed by the love he gets in this part of the world. Beyond his fame and championships, it was the witty charm of the all time great that makes him popular as he drew laughter from the crowd with his quips. He looked forward to one day training a Filipino in his camp and cited that it takes patience to develop talent. It’s important for programs like the Yamaha Grand Prix to ensure growth and passion of aspiring riders. As to how long he was going to race, it was still up in the air for the 9-time World Champion. He recognizes that he is already seasoned and will have to hang up his helmet one day but before that happens he had a surprise that every Filipino will cherish. When the 2017 MotoGP season starts his YZR-M1 will have a sticker of the Filipino flag as he represents the country all over the world; this news was naturally received with deafening applause and cheers. He ended his remarks with an advice for his new teammate “Go Slow” a joke that made everyone laugh. Of course he said that remark was because of how much talent Maverick had and his admiration of how good the his new partner can really be.

After the press conference it was time for some action on the racetrack. This was the first time the public will witness the duo in action; they rode a specially designed Sniper 150 MXi that showcased MotoGP graphics and the riders’ signature monickers. Thousands were around the track and their appearance caused pandemonium because of the uncontainable excitement. When they finished their laps they greeted the Filipino crowd one last time as they stood alongside Yamaha Motor Philippines President – Toru Osugi to declare the Yamaha Grand Prix 8 officially open.

Valentino and Maverick waved to their fans when they bid farewell as their eyes glistened because of the joy that they had given and received. It was an unforgettable experience for everyone and for Valentino and Maverick to have their hearts Revved by the Filipino people is a milestone that is absolutely astonishing.

Now it’s time for Valentino Rossi and Maverick Vinales to show the world how their partnership exemplifies the Excellence of Yamaha Racing.

It’s time to see how Legends are made. – YMPH

LTO issues official specs for conduction-based temporary plates – Auto Industry News

There appears to be a new development with regards to the issue surrounding new vehicle registration with the Land Transportation Office (LTO), and no, it’s not with regards to the issuance of the plate itself.

Motorists, authorized dealers, and accessory shops have been making temporary plates of various designs (improvised, even) for nearly four years given the long-standing problems with regards to the supposed supplier of the official metal license plates. Some have even used temporary plate designs that even mimic styles from other countries such as Europe and Japan.

Yamaha Club Presidents Tour 2017

Yamaha Motor Philippines held their President’s Tour with select members of Yamaha clubs from around the country last January 25-27, 2017.  The club officers, mostly the Presidents and/or Vice-Presidents, with representatives flown in from Visayas and Mindanao, converged at the Yamaha Y-Zone in the Greenfields District, Mandaluyong.

After a relaxing bus trip to the Summer Capital of the Philippines, Baguio City, participants settled down at the Venus Parkview Hotel where the formal President’s Club meeting was held.  The second day started very early as the tour to Sagada was on the agenda.  Departing before dawn from Baguio City, all the riders were treated to the famous Cordillera cold weather.  The stunning beauty of the the north was in full display as the morning sun painted the landscape during the morning ride to Sagada.  The extremely cold weather delayed our trip but everyone made it safely to Rock Inn in Sagada in time for our lunch.

After a hearty lunch all the participants moved on to the Sagada Bilza Lodge which served as the groups jump off points for the different activities which were lined up.  The adventurous ones made the long descent into Sumaguing Cave and trekked to the famous hanging coffins.  There was also a trip to Sagada Pottery for those looking for tamer things to do.  Unfortunately the late hour prevented us from visiting more of what Sagada had to offer.  But as the wind picked up and the temperature dropped, food was served and everyone retreated to their own small groups as the night wound down and prepared for an early departure in the morning.

Thick fog greeted the riders as we departed from Sagada to the Strawberry Fields in La Trinidad, Benguet.  Again, as the fog broke, bright sunshine revealed more of the stunning scenery of the Cordilleras.  The mandatory stop at the “Highest Point” gave the participants a chance to have their photos taken at this famous landmark along the fabled Halsema Highway.  Arriving at the Strawberry Farms a bit past lunch time the ride formally ended and the groups were shuttled back to Manila on board our respective buses.

It was a truly unique experience, even for us seasoned travelers.  The cold temperatures we encountered was probably the lowest I have ever experienced.  I can only imagine the awe our southern visitors, most who have only heard of these places from stories and from social media, must have felt when face to face with such majesty.

Thank you Yamaha Motor Philippines for the chance to share the experience with new friends and reconnect with old ones.  Till next time!

Here is a list of the clubs that joined the ride.

  • Soul-i Exclusive Team
  • Team MSi Philippines
  • Yamaha Fino Club Cebu
  • Yamaha Cebuana Club
  • All Mio Club Bacolod
  • Club Mio MXi Cebu
